Production Chemist

Position Purpose
Support the synthesis and analysis of a wide range of compounds that are required for Mirus Bio's novel transfection technologies and other products or applications. Working closely with the R&D, Quality, and Production departments, implement GxP procedures for the manufacture of small molecules, lipids, and polymers, and create technical reports and position papers.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Synthesize small molecules and polymers to support the manufacturing needs of the Production Department by utilizing Good Laboratory Practices. This includes following standard operating procedures, testing for quality parameters, completing batch records and transferring bulk material to the Production Department.
  • Take a lead role in the writing and delivery of quality-related technical reports and position papers; perform technical batch manufacture reviews on both RUO and GMP products originating from Mirus and partner CMOs.
  • Extensively characterize compounds using various physical and chemical characterization techniques such gel permeation chromatography (GPC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), fluorescence, mass spectrometry (MS), Infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR).
  • Contribute to the preparation and evaluation of new product SOPs and analysis; help determine technical feasibility and application of specifications to new and existing compounds.
  • Attend, present data, and participate in discussions at R&D, Production and Quality meetings; Participate in background presentations on a rotating basis.


  • Act as a scientific resource including: trouble-shooting scientific problems related to the manufacture of Products and pre-cursor materials.
  • Excel at being able to communicate clearly with different departments and at planning experiments/synthesis based on time constraints and priorities as set by Production and Quality.
  • Qualify any analytical and laboratory equipment where necessary.
  • Help perform Development studies and syntheses for novel compounds to be used in future products; help formulate new SOPs and batch records; perform scale-up development studies.
  • Perform duties with a view to possibly implementing and help set up a GMP compliant environment.
  • With the support of the R&D group, design, execute, and analyze laboratory experiments that support the continued development and application of new and existing transfection technologies and analytical techniques.


  • Using GxP procedures, accurately and diligently perform organic and polymer syntheses according to SOPs; reliably record batch records.
  • Interface and work effectively with other R&D, Production and Quality scientists in the development and commercialization of new and existing transfection products.
  • Adhere to Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) guidelines (in designated areas) and standard laboratory practices to create a safe laboratory environment.
  • Conscientious operation of laboratory equipment, independent lab supply ordering, and general awareness and maintenance of laboratory cleanliness and organization.
  • Perform analysis such as NMR, HPLC-MS, and MS at UW-Madison: develop good working relationships with the relevant academic departments (Chemistry, Biotech Center) to ensure high quality data collection and continued access to equipment.
  • Build positive relationships during internal and external interactions.
  • Represent the company in a positive and professional manner.

Skills Set


  • Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) or Masters with several years of relevant experience synthesizing small molecules, lipids and/or polymers in a cGMP laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with writing technical reports and position papers; ability to modify and complete manufacture batch records and SOPs for a biotech or drug delivery company.
  • Hands on experience with a variety of analytical techniques, including NMR, GPC/SEC, fluorescence, FT-IR, MS, UV-vis, HPLC, etc.
  • Ability to work productively in a cross-disciplinary team environment.
  • Capability to work in an organized manner, to make critical observations, and to maintain good records of the results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.


  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary laboratory setting.
  • Experience with polymer chemistry synthesis and characterization techniques.
  • Previous experience working for in a GMP laboratory at a life sciences company is preferred.

Qualification Requirements: BSc or MS in Chemistry, Polymers, Materials, Biotechnology or related field

Physical Demands: Most of workday is spent working at a laboratory bench, computer, or laboratory instrument. Some travel may be required.
