Mirus Corporation Announces a Patent for the Covalent Attachment of Compounds to Genes

Madison, WI, September 1, 2000 - Mirus Corporation, a Madison, Wisconsin, based molecular therapeutics firm, announced the issuance of a broad US patent, U.S. #6,093,701, covering a method for the covalent attachment of compounds to genes. This technology facilitates the attachment of compounds to genes for enhancing the cellular transport of genes to predetermined targets, while maintaining the gene's functionality.

A key aspect in obtaining efficient gene delivery in non-dividing cells is the ability to transport genes both into a given cell, and to specific locations within that cell (e.g. target genes to the nucleus). This patent covers new methodologies for modifying nucleic acid sequences that will allow the targeting of genes to specific locations within a cell, including the nucleus.
